Police rescue herdsmen abducted by Boko Haram

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Damian A. Chukwu in a press briefing in Maiduguri on Monday, said that his men have busted a suspected Boko Haram terrorists attempt to abduct some herdsmen.

CP Chukwu explained that the terrorist group held to ransom the herdsmen at Galte bush in Shuwari, a ward in Nganzai local government of Borno.

Acting on a tip-off by some informants, the police on station in the local government dispatched a team to bust the plot and rescue the men.

'On receipt of the information, policemen led by the DPO and Civilian JTF operatives mobilised to the area and engaged the insurgents in a gun battle', he explained.

He added that the insurgents could not stand the police and hence fled, abandoning a General Purpose Machine Gun, GPMP, with number 151399 and five rounds of live ammunition.

Similarly, an AK 47 riffle with breech number 5240954 along with 10 pieces of live ammunition was discovered in a shop along Baga road, opposite a First Bank branch office in Maiduguri.

The statement added that the development was reported to the police by Aminu Sani and Alice James of Jajeri ward.

The CP said investigation is currently ongoing to identify the owner and source of the ammunition.

He concluded on the note that people should remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity around them to the nearest police station or call 0805 700 0001.
